How to see the file extension in the Files app on iPhone and iPad

In this quick guide, we’ll show you two easy ways to see the extensions of saved images, videos, audios, documents, and more in the Files app on iPhone and iPad. You can choose to display the file type for each file, or turn on the option to always display the extension for all files in the Files app for iOS and iPadOS.

Get information about a file in the Apple Files app

1. Open the Files app and go to any folder.
2. Tap and hold on a file and select Get Info.
3. Here you will see the file type extension next to the file name, below the file name and in the Type field.

Follow these steps to set your iPhone or iPad running iOS 16 or iPadOS 16 and later to always display the file extension:

1. Enter the Files app and navigate to any folder.
2. Tap the More icon (three dots inside a circle in the top right corner).
3. Select “View Options”from the list.
4. Click “Show all extensions”.

You will immediately see the file extension at the end of each filename.

The file extension display setting applies to the entire Files app. This means that you will always see the names of the extensions, even if you go to any other folder inside On My iPhone, iCloud, or add third-party folders like Google Drive.
