Who needs internet when you can use Google Maps offline?
Google Maps allows you to download offline maps so you can navigate when you don’t have an internet connection. Here’s how to use it.
GPS navigation systems today are extremely sophisticated and very, very useful in everyday life. Whether you are in a car, on foot or not, it is always important to know where you are and where you are going. Some solutions only use GPS, others require an Internet connection to provide more information. And, unfortunately, in the absence of communication, the entire system becomes inoperable. For example, if you didn’t take precautions on Google Maps.
Google Maps allows you to download maps for offline use. So even if you get lost in the middle of nowhere, Google Maps will help you. If you are planning a trip to a remote area, you should download a map (or several if necessary) from Google Maps. Here’s everything you need to know to take advantage of this feature.
How to download google maps
First of all, you don’t need to download Google maps. Before you go on a trip, download a specific area—a city or a nearby place where you’ll be staying—where you’ll be spending time and may not have a connection on your phone.
To upload a map to Google Maps, open the app on iOS or Android and tap your profile picture in the top right corner – you’ll need to sign in with your Google account. From the menu that appears, select Offline Plans > Choose Your Plan.
Use your fingers to correctly position the map to be downloaded within the specified frame. Use one finger to move the map and two to zoom in or out. As you move the map, you will see the size required to store it on your phone. Once the map is defined, click “Download”.
You can also enter a city or other area directly into the Google Maps input box and click the “Download”button that appears in the download window. This feature is only available on iOS.
You must be connected to Wi-Fi to download the map. If you want to do this via data, go to the “Offline maps”page, click on the gear icon, then “Download settings”and select “Via Wi-Fi or mobile network”in “Download settings”. Once the map has been downloaded, you will be taken to the Offline Maps page to see all your offline maps.
How to use them
Now you can use Google Maps even if you don’t have a connection in a certain area. And only in this area. Obviously, you won’t have very accurate data on travel times or alternatives and other possible issues along the way, you’ll only have a vague estimate. Directions for cycling, walking and public transport are also not available offline. There is only car navigation.
