Lenovo is shutting down Legion’s gaming smartphone business

Lenovo is cutting costs with its Legion gaming division. There aren’t many people in this segment anymore.

Lenovo has built something very solid and has built a good reputation with its Legion line of smartphones for gaming, devices with very impressive specs and some rather anecdotal but underperforming options like SSD RAID storage or pop-up cameras. Today , the company has sadly closed that division entirely, according to information from the Android Authority.

The brand spokesman’s statement is unequivocal: “Lenovo is phasing out Android-based Legion gaming smartphones as part of its broader business transformation and consolidation of its video game portfolio. As the market leader in gaming devices and solutions, Lenovo is fully committed to advancing the gaming category in all its aspects, focusing on areas where it can bring the most value to the community, the gaming world.”

Lenovo’s commitment to gaming has most likely waned due to the brand’s failure to establish a strong market position outside of China. At the beginning of this adventure, the company hired several employees from the ASUS ROG team, which clearly shows that it is completely immersed in mobile games. Its latest Legion-branded product was the Y70, announced last August, which is slightly less premium, with its latest flagship over a year old. It was a Y90 released in February 2022.

There aren’t many people in this segment anymore.

Now that Lenovo has gone out of the market, only ASUS remains with its ROG line of smartphones, as well as the Nubia Red Magic and Xiaomi Black Shark, but the latter has recently parted ways with much of its payroll. Lenovo will now certainly focus on its Moto line as well as specialty models such as the ThinkPhone.
