Microsoft and iFixit launch self-healing tools for Surface devices
Microsoft and iFixit are launching official Surface repair tools, which is a big step towards manually repairing tech devices.
One of the criticisms we often hear of tech companies is the difficulty of repairing the devices they make. And we’re not only talking about technical difficulties, such as using specialized hardware, but also the difficulty of obtaining official components, accessing software, and manuals. This means that handing over a device to a third-party service center often produces mixed results. Let’s not talk about fixing it yourself. But things are moving forward, especially at Microsoft.

At the same time, there is good news from Microsoft today. Indeed, the Redmond giant has decided to come and make life easier for its customers when it comes to repairs anyway. The American firm is working with disassembly specialist iFixit to offer specialized tools and accessories for sale to repair Microsoft Surface products. All of these tools and accessories were designed by Microsoft and are manufactured by iFixit.
A big step towards manual repair of technological devices.
According to an iFixit press release: “Microsoft’s decision to offer tools to freelance technicians is a step in the right direction. Like many companies, we still have a long way to go to true maintainability and we are excited to join them on this adventure. This is a great first step and a market test – we hope to be able to offer the same tools to the rest of the repair community in the future, and Microsoft is committed to expanding its access to repair tools for new products next year.”
In any case, this is a really good start, and it suggests a change in attitude, at least from Microsoft’s point of view, towards manual repairs. Apple, for its part, has also made progress in this direction by launching a manual repair program, offering iPhone and Mac owners access to official components.
