Mortal Kombat: 30 Years of Violence licensed from NetherRealm Studios
Thirties for Mortal Kombat.
Mortal Kombat is celebrating its 30th anniversary since first appearing in arcades in October 1992. The gory style of the fighting game made it an instant classic and influenced the video game industry for years to come. The famous license created by NetherRealm Studios was also one of the first video game series to become a multimedia franchise with films, comics or even animated series.
Mortal Kombat co-creator Ed Boon said:
One thing we appreciate about working on Mortal Kombat all this time is that some of the team members working on the franchise today weren’t even born when the first part came out. In this way, you benefit from a large number of players whose experience and age vary, each of which belongs to a different culture and background. That’s why we never run out of new ideas. And even if I can’t foresee them all… Without a doubt, we will always be able to bring a touch of novelty to every Mortal Kombat opus. This is what I can say without fear. The Mortal Kombat franchise will never lose its originality as it never stops pushing the boundaries of video game design.
