The battle between streaming platforms is being played out on several fronts, including price and features, of course, but one of the most important for users is the catalog. Some are looking for content of a certain genre, others are looking for original works, and so on. Netflix has a little bit of everything, and today the streaming giant has won the rights to stream the great Japanese animation classic.

The platform has just acquired (non-exclusive) rights to stream several cult anime. According to Variety, the company recently signed a contract with Nippon TV to be able to offer Berserk, Claymore, Death Note, Parasite and nine other series and movies to its subscribers worldwide.

In this list of new Japanese animations, you should know that Netflix will offer Hunter X Hunter first. Starting September 2, the film adaptation of Yoshihiro Togashi’s cult manga will be available in 104 countries around the world. Several films, including Death Note and Hunter X Hunter, have been in Netflix’s North American catalog for years. And the former is so popular on the platform that Netflix asked the Duffer brothers to make another adaptation of the series. Other notable additions to this contract include Hajime no Ippo, Monster, and Nana.

Enough to expand the anime offer

This agreement will also allow fans of Japanese animation to watch some of these series on a platform other than Crunchyroll. Indeed, ever since Sony bought the streaming service for around $1.2 billion in 2020 and began porting Funimation’s catalog to it, Crunchyroll has, for better or worse, become the dominant service for animation.
