Sony’s latest PS5 DualSense Edge game controller now works on Apple devices

iOS 16.4 and other Apple updates let you connect Sony’s latest and greatest DualSense Edge game controller to your iPhone, iPad, Apple TV and Mac.

  • What’s happening? iOS 16.4 and related updates allow you to connect Sony’s DualSense Edge controller to Apple devices for gaming.
  • Why care? Apple devices still did not support the new Sony controller.
  • What to do? Update your Apple hardware to the latest OS versions.

iOS 16.4 adds support for the Sony DualSense Edge controller.

iPhone, iPad, and other Apple devices support Sony and Microsoft game controllers, but do not support the new DualSense Edge controller released in January 2023.

That changed with iOS 16.4, iPadOS 16.4, tvOS 16.4, and macOS Ventura 13.3 software updates, which made the $199 PlayStation 5 DualSense Edge wireless controller compatible with iPhone, iPad, Apple TV, and Mac.

The Apple support document lists the following supported Sony controllers:

  • PlayStation DualShock 4 wireless controller
  • PlayStation 5 DualSense Wireless Controller
  • DualSense Edge Wireless Controller for PlayStation 5

If you have a DualSense Edge and play games from the App Store or subscribe to Apple Arcade, this news will be music to your ears.

Using game controllers with Apple devices

Over the years, Apple has built some pretty solid support for game controllers, even though Apple devices aren’t great gaming machines. You can easily connect a wired or wireless controller and customize the button layout and other features to your liking.

  • iOS/iPadOS: Settings → General → Game controller
  • macOS: Settings → Game controller
  • tvOS: Settings → Remotes and devices → Bluetooth
  • macOS Ventura: System Preferences → Game Controllers

However, Apple platforms do not support vibration and motion features.

Apple allows up to four game controllers on a single device. Both wireless and wired connections are supported, but wired USB is only available for iPads and Macs with USB-C ports.

Apart from Sony and Microsoft controllers, any MFi-compatible controller (such as SteelSeries’ Nimbus and Stratus) should work with your Apple device. On top of that, 8BitDo recently released a firmware update that allowed Apple to support six of its game controllers, and will expand to more in the future.
