The new DockCase M.2 SSD provides up to ten seconds of power loss protection to keep your data safe. It has a user-friendly status screen and looks great.
DockCase M.2 is an SSD enclosure to protect your data
- The new M.2 SSD enclosure is DockCase’s sixth Kickstarter project. He appeared earlier in 2022 and is about to complete the second half of his campaign.
- This dedicated NVMe/SATA III enclosure accommodates 2.5″hard drives (HDDs) and flash drives (SSDs) from 7mm to 15mm high. It accommodates storage devices of varying lengths (2230, 2242, 2260, and 2280 SSDs) with a maximum total storage capacity of eight terabytes (two terabytes per SSD).
- The accessory works on all modern platforms and devices such as iOS, iPadOS, macOS, Android, Windows, Linux, ChromeOS, PlayStation 5, Harmony and others.
- M.2 includes several technologies to protect SSDs, and of course, its gray casing looks business-like. It is very sexy and durable, the combination of aluminum alloy and tempered glass looks great.
- Most importantly, the M.2 is small enough (127x39x14mm) to fit in your pocket or purse. Two built-in USB-C ports provide data transfer and an additional 15W power supply if needed. The included USB-C to USB-C cable has a built-in USB-A adapter so you don’t have to worry about USB ports, cables, and standards.

10 seconds power loss protection
Perhaps most importantly, M.2 runs for ten seconds after a power outage to ensure everything is written to disk in the event of a power outage.
With built-in electrical charge capacitors, the M.2 can keep the SSD powered long enough to write buffered data to flash and update its mapping tables. Read: How to manage volumes in macOS using Disk Utility
Without power loss protection in such situations, you may lose your work, as some files may not be fully saved. It is also not uncommon for a power failure to affect the structure of the disk and render it unreadable until it is erased. You don’t want to put your data at risk of power failure and M.2 can help with that.
Built-in status display
The small 240×240 LCD screen built into the M.2 gives you a quick overview of your external storage status, power-off protection and other features, allowing you to switch functions easily. With the D key, you can easily navigate through the menu, select multiple functions, view detailed information about the SSD, etc.
Heat dissipation
The accessory features a unique dual heat dissipation design to ensure that your storage device operates within normal parameters, delivering high transfer speeds. This heat dissipation system uses a graphite thermal pad mounted on a heatsink.
Performance and data transfer rate
So how fast is it? Well, it’s fast USB 3.2 Gen 2. DockCase says M.2 is capable of transferring a one gigabyte file in one second.
Needless to say, your mileage may vary as the actual experience depends on the type and brand of hard drive/SSD. M.2 uses accelerated transfer protocols (UASP and TRIM) to provide sequential read and write speeds up to one gigabyte per second. Unfortunately, Thunderbolt connectivity is not offered at this time.
Prices and Availability
Two models are offered, with five seconds of power loss protection and ten. The DockCase includes a flexible silicone case that provides 360 degree impact protection. Keep in mind that you will need to install the HDD/SSD yourself, which is not difficult at all (the process involves using a Philips head screw to hold the storage device in place).
DockCase M.2 is currently $69 on Kickstarter.
The price of early booking will increase to $99 after the official launch of the project. You can hurry up and support the project now as the campaign is already fully funded. The first deliveries are expected within a few days after the end of the campaign.
