Periscope lens in Apple iPhone 15?

The iPhone 15 may have a periscope lens to allow true optical zoom.

A few years ago, we saw many smartphone manufacturers, such as Huawei, release devices equipped with very, very powerful zoom cameras. A good example is Samsung, which offered 100x zoom phones that used artificial intelligence to capture images from very long distances without blurring the end result, which is often the case with digital zoom. Apple would also like to be able to go further in terms of scaling, but not necessarily digital.

iPhone 15 may have a periscope lens

The Apple iPhone also has zoom, but it’s not as powerful. However, that may change with the release of the iPhone 15. Indeed, according to analyst Jeff Pu of Haitong International Securities in a note obtained by 9to5Mac, the latter believes that the Cupertino-based company would have made the decision to integrate a periscope lens into its iPhone 15.

To offer true optical zoom

This periscope lens will allow the iPhone to have a 5x optical zoom, allowing users to zoom in on distant objects and capture clear images. Optical zoom is usually preferred over digital because optical zoom only crops the image, which inevitably leads to loss of sharpness and some details. Thus, with such a periscope lens, Apple could achieve 5x optical zoom without weighing down the device’s camera module.

That being said, since the iPhone 15 won’t be released for another year and a half, it’s impossible to know if this information is true. For now, we’ll take this as just a rumor. Until then, be patient. But who knows, maybe with the iPhone 15 we will be able to enjoy a really good optical zoom. And that would be very nice!
