As the end credits of Afterlife hint, the next chapter of the Ghostbusters franchise will return to the setting of the original New York City firehouse. Managed by Sony Pictures Entertainment during the pandemic with theaters closed, Ghostbusters: Afterlife became the cornerstone of the Thanksgiving 2021 holiday box office, eventually grossing over $200 million worldwide.

The sequel to Ghostbusters: Afterlife, which Sony Pictures Entertainment teased during CinemaCon with a secret trailer confirmed on Ghostbusters Day, with director Jason Reitman and writer Gil Kenan, will officially hit theaters by December 20, 2023 in the US and probably a few days earlier in Europe, and mostly in France. With four films, Sony’s Ghostbusters franchise has grossed over $938 million worldwide.
Netflix is working on a Ghostbusters animated series.
Based on the Ghostbusters intellectual property, the project was conceived by Ghostbusters: Afterlife co-creators Jason Reitman and Gil Kenan (Ghost Corps) and Sony Pictures Animation. The animated series is part of the expanding Ghostbusters universe that began with Ivan Reitman’s Ghostbusters in 1984 and has since become a popular culture phenomenon, culminating in last year’s Ghostbusters: Afterlife.
