OpenAI opens bug bounty program for ChatGPT with $200-$20,000 bounty.

OpenAI has decided to appeal to the public to find bugs in ChatGPT by announcing a “Bug Bounty Program” aimed at rewarding people who report security flaws, vulnerabilities or other problems with the artificial intelligence (IA) system.

This program is open to everyone, from researchers and developers to ordinary people who are interested in learning about this technology. Rewards are given in cash ranging from $200 for “insignificant results”to $20,000 for “exceptional results”. This is a dedicated Bugcrowd platform that handles submissions and payments.

Google and Apple are among the tech companies that have already implemented bug bounty programs. In 2019, the Mountain View firm paid out at least $6.5 million to those who found and reported bugs, up to and including signing a check for $201,337 for a single reward. The Cupertino-based company goes even further, charging up to $2 million to anyone who finds ways to “bypass special lockdown protections.”

With rewards ranging from $200 to $20,000.

Over the past few weeks, ChatGPT has encountered a number of bugs. Last month, the entire system had to be shut down after users reported seeing someone else’s conversation titles. Just a few days later, a Twitter user claimed to have discovered over 80 secret plugins while hacking ChatGPT.

Any bugs reported to OpenAI will not be eligible for financial rewards, including for a jailbreak, or even for the model to say something negative. This announcement about this bug bounty program also attempts to show that the company cares about privacy and security, but also adds that “while we are working hard to limit the risks, we cannot predict all the ways whose users will use [this] technology in the real world.”Time will tell if this initiative will bear fruit.
