A fan has recreated the original The Legend of Zelda game in Minecraft.
The developer used all of the game’s creative arsenal, including custom textures, to recreate this classic 1986 NES game, spinning and looking in all directions,” explains C1OUS3R during the video production. “I would do a voxel model like I did for my previous video games but it’s barely visible and it takes 30 times longer and I really don’t have time for that.”
“I then overlaid this model onto a hollow pumpkin, one of the items you can wear on your head in Minecraft. Then I made the player invisible so it looks like you’re controlling Link. Then with a folder of datapack functions, which are ultimately just blocks of commands in writing, I can determine which way the player is moving to rotate the model, and make it look like “it’s moving”. Finally, just animate the textures and that’s it. You have a playable link.”
Without any mods!
C1OUS3R explains on Reddit that he will be releasing a playable version that will run all the way to the first boss fight once the video hits 5,000 likes. At the time of writing these lines, there are already 1300 of them. The developer also explains that he wants to eventually have the entire game engine in Minecraft. “It’s much easier to understand than something like Unity. I think Minecraft can really help people get into game development.”
