Overwatch 2: How to play Doomfist (guide)

Overwatch 2 is on the cusp of its full release, and in addition to being completely F2P, it also offers cross-platform compatibility compared to its predecessor. The new update brings a new game mode, a new character and a few changes to the existing roster. These changes included Doomfist, who was previously a DPS agent, now with tank abilities and HP. After beta testing the game where players felt the change, Doomfist has gained a lot of attention as a powerful tank and quasi-DPS character. It’s not entirely clear if he’ll get a nerf in the future, but for now, let’s dive into everything there is to know about Doomfist in Overwatch 2 and how to play with all the new abilities.

Is the Doomfist an effective tank in Overwatch 2

The Doomfist is the main offensive tank in Overwatch 2. Now, if you play Overwatch a lot, you probably know that the tank is the role that takes the brunt of the opponent’s attacks. This role consists of the bulky characters with the highest HP and is required to walk forward into enemy territory and attack, allowing the rest of your team to take over and strategize.

In particular, with OW2 this year, Blizzard ended the meta with two or more tanks in the main PvP mode with 5v5 matches and only one tank mandate. This requires tank players to be more versatile in their play style, as well as being a “shield tank”that specializes in characters like Reinhardt. Doomfist is viable in the single tank meta because it can block enough attacks with Power Block but at the same time penetrate enemy positions and deal massive damage due to its former DPS abilities.

All weapons and abilities of the Doomfist

  • Hand Cannon (Weapon): This is a shotgun that Doomfist can fire from the hand, but with ranged bullets. Each pellet deals 5 damage and the weapon fires 4 shots before auto-reloading after a short cooldown.
  • Power Block: This ability allows Doomfist to shield and absorb any attacks from enemy weapons. This shield reduces all damage by 80% and boosts the Glove’s Rocket Strike ability after blocking attacks for 100 HP.
  • Rocket Punch: This is a damaging mobility skill that gives players the ability to charge up their gauntlet and launch them in the right direction. If aimed at an enemy, deals 15-30 damage on impact and a little more damage on wall impact.
  • Seismic Slam: This is another damaging mobility skill where players can jump into the air and smash the ground with an AoE that deals 50 damage. This ability is also sometimes used to jump to higher places on the map.
  • Meteor Strike: Doomfist’s ultimate ability is similar to Seismic Strike, but you can choose a target location to smash it and deal heavy damage. Inner Circle AoE deals 300 damage.
  • Passive Abilities: This gives you up to 150 temporary armor to deal damage with your abilities. Armor begins to slowly disintegrate after 1 second.

How to play Doomfist?

Doomfist is best played as a Brawler tank that enters and destroys enemy defenses. This goes against the “off-tank”or offensive tank role that Overwatch players are used to. Right now, the best and standard way to play Doomfist is a one-way procedure. Basically, your goal as the protagonist of Doomfist should be to charge up your Rocket Punch as soon as possible to target and deal massive damage, or even kill a soft enemy character. This means you head into the enemy’s line of fire and use Power Block while absorbing some chip damage to charge up your gauntlet.

Other abilities, like Seismic Slam, work best with team synergy where you dash into enemy territory and create a distraction while your fighters occupy space and strategize their attack. Doomfist especially excels in this case due to the many mobility skills it has. You can slam into enemies and stun them, deal damage with your hand cannon, and use your missile strike to quickly back away for damage.

This is everything you need to know about how to play Doomfist in Overwatch.
