Pennsylvania Proposes Apple AirTags Abuse Prevention Act
Pennsylvania would like the law to better regulate the use of AirTags and prevent them from being used for bad purposes.
Admittedly, Apple AirTags are very interesting and very effective trackers while remaining relatively affordable. But these little accessories also have some pretty bad press. Indeed, they pose an obvious danger, since they can be used to spy on people or objects and their movements. For example, we’ve heard of people being tracked with AirTag or vehicles tagged with AirTag so they can be stolen later.
Pennsylvania would like the law to better regulate the use of AirTags.
Although the Cupertino-based company has implemented a number of features specifically dedicated to respecting privacy and preventing such espionage, it seems that this is not enough. In any case, that’s the opinion of Pennsylvania State Representative John Galloway, who recently proposed legislation to ban the use of AirTag for mere harassment.
and prevent their use for bad purposes
In the words of John Galloway himself: “The AirTag precision locator tool should only be used to locate property belonging to the owner such as keys, wallet or school bag, which was the main purpose of this product. My law will protect the people of Pennsylvania by ensuring that this unreasonable use is covered by updating our criminal code to prohibit anyone from tracking someone’s whereabouts or their property without their consent.”
And we suspect that if this proposed law were to become law in good and proper form, it would have to provide insights to other states in the United States and other countries around the world. And if we can fully appreciate what the Cupertino-based company is trying to do with its AirTags, it might be time for the giant to start thinking about features that will further advance user protection.
