After several months of testing, Microsoft Teams is optimized for Apple Mac silicon computers.

Microsoft Teams now runs natively on Apple’s silicon Macs, bringing better performance and lower power consumption to the Apple M1 and M2 chipsets.

  • What is happening? Microsoft has announced that it is now releasing a version of the Teams desktop app that runs natively on Apple’s silicon PCs. The new version eliminates the need for Rosetta emulation when using Teams.
  • Why care? If you use the app and have an Apple Silicon computer, you’ll get much better performance (especially when interacting with multiple commands) without sacrificing battery life. Teams is among apps like Zoom that the world has relied on during the COVID-19 pandemic and continues to rely on for remote work. At the start of 2022, Teams had 270 million accounts.
  • What to do? If you have an Intel-based Mac, keep using and updating your copy of Teams. The same thing happens if you have an Apple Silicon Mac because Microsoft automatically updates the app for all macOS users. Deployment on silicon Apple Macs will take a few months, so you’ll need to be patient (or try to start the download manually).

The update took several months to develop and is now ready to roll out. According to Microsoft’s announcement, a “production grade”version of Teams is now available as a universal download that will initially run on the entire Mac lineup, including Apple Silicon-based computers.

How to download Microsoft Teams

Microsoft provides a single version of Teams for macOS that includes code for Intel and Apple silicon so you don’t have to choose the correct version to download. As mentioned, Microsoft’s automatic update mechanism will automatically update your copy of Teams. Apple’s silicone Macs will be updated in stages and are expected to be completed in the coming months.

Microsoft is committed to innovation and is committed to the Mac, which is why we’re excited to bring this to our Mac users. All Mac users will be automatically updated to the latest version of Teams. The public (GA) version of the native Teams app for Mac with Apple Silicon processor is being gradually rolled out to customers over the coming months.

So be patient and check back later if you don’t have the new version yet. Or, try updating your copy of the Teams app manually by clicking the settings menu next to your profile picture in the top-right corner, then selecting Check for Updates.
