Sony PlayStation VR2 First Look Revealed: Sphere Design

After the announcement of the PS VR2 earlier this year, Sony has finally unveiled the design of the new VR headset. The headset’s design language matches that of the new PlayStation VR2 Sense controller, as well as PS5 and Dualsense.

Hideaki Nishino, SIE’s senior vice president of platform operations, explains that the headset is shaped similarly to the PS VR2 Sense controller and has “a matching ball look.”The round shape represents the 360-degree view players experience when they enter the VR world.

Nishino, in the same PlayStation Blog post, shared more details on the design of the new VR headset, explaining that there is more focus on adding roundness to the design. This is mainly due to the fact that the headset is designed for constant human contact, similar to the rounded edges of the Dualsense controller and the Pulse 3D headset.

SIE Finally Reveals the Design of the PlayStation VR2 Headset

SIE confirms that the headset has been designed with particular attention to ergonomics to provide a comfortable feel for people with different head sizes. The first PS VR carefully balanced the weight of the headset and featured a simple, adjustable headband that was retained in the design of the PlayStation VR2.

The headset will also come with an adjustable scope that moves the scope area closer or further away from your face. The headset will also ship with a stereo headphone jack in the same location as the original PS VR.

New features include a lens adjustment dial, so users will have the additional ability to adjust the distance between the lenses between their eyes to optimize their view. The headset will also be thinner and lighter compared to PS VR and will include a new built-in motor for headset feedback.

SIE has yet to confirm a release date for the VR headset, but has confirmed that headset development kits are already in the hands of game developers, ensuring there will be games for the headset at launch.
