Hey M2: You can now order the new 13″ MacBook Pro
The first machine with Apple’s second-generation M2 system-on-a-chip is already available for order. While it won’t arrive until June 24th, you can buy the new 13-inch MacBook Pro today. Apple is also now selling its new dual-port USB-C charger through its online store.
The 2022 13-inch MacBook Pro update uses the same design and has all the same features as its 2020 predecessor, which used the M1 chip. The only major difference is the inclusion of the M2, which Apple says can be up to 40 percent faster in some tasks than the M1.
While this is Apple’s first M2-based computer, it’s likely the forerunner of many others. Next up will be a refreshed 13-inch MacBook Air, due sometime next month. This computer will adopt some design cues from the 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro with a taller screen, screen notch, and no touch bar.
Apple hasn’t announced any other M2 machines beyond this one yet, but it’s safe to say that the M2 could appear on the 24-inch iMac, Mac mini, iPad Air, and iPad Pro based on the devices that shipped with the M1 in the previous generation. In addition, Apple will likely develop faster M2 cousins for more expensive machines like the MacBook Pro and Mac Studio, as was the case with previous releases of the M1 Pro, M1 Max, and M1 Studio. However, we do not have a time frame for these launches.

As noted, today also marks the first day of availability for Apple’s new dual-port USB-C charger. It was announced alongside the MacBook Air, but Apple is already selling two charger options, although the MacBook Air is still a few weeks away. Both options are 35W chargers with the same specs, and both cost $59. One of them has an identical design to the MacBook chargers we’ve seen over the past few years, and the other has the new folding design we’ve seen at WWDC 2022 – that’s the only difference as far as we can tell.
