PS5: Latest beta to date finally adds voice chat via Discord

Sony’s PS5 is finally welcoming Discord voice chat, a feature currently in beta, like VRR 1440p.

After offering to integrate certain Discord features on the PlayStation 5 console in early 2022, Sony is finally adding voice chat to the latest beta version of its console OS. PS5 testers in the US, Canada, and Japan can join Discord calls months after Microsoft introduced the feature to the XBox. The PS5 also welcomes variable refresh rate (VRR) support for 1440p, as well as interface improvements, among other things.

Discord integration is still a little wobbly, as it was when it first came to Xbox. Here’s how to set up this thing to take advantage of it, according to the Discord blog. You first need to link your PlayStation Network (PSN) account to Discord and then select Discord under the “Linked Services”section. After that, you can complete the registration either using the QR code or through the PS5’s built-in web browser.

Every time you want to use Discord on a console, you need to use your mobile device to transfer the conversation, which is far from ideal. However, last November Microsoft offered the option to join Discord voice chat directly from the console, hopefully Sony will do the same.

The feature is currently in beta, such as VRR 1440p.

Other new social features include a new way to share screenshots, group chats in the toolbar, and a friends game screen to see which friends are playing which games right now. Sony is also introducing VRR for gaming at 1440p, so HDMI 2.1 displays should offer a smoother experience at that resolution. Sony introduced VRR on its PS5 last April and is 1440p compatible shortly thereafter, but the two features haven’t worked together yet.

Players will also find new tools to access PS4 game data on PS5, as well as the ability to move games from one PS5 to another via Wi-Fi or Ethernet. This new beta is provided to certified testers. It should become available to everyone in the coming weeks or months.
