PS5: Sony releases update bringing Discord voice chat to everyone

Sony is releasing an update that brings Discord voice chats to PS5. The process is still very difficult, while we are waiting for the best.

The PlayStation 5 update that brings Discord voice chat support to the console is finally out of beta and available to all PS5 players. Those who have already installed the 7.0 system update can now enable Discord calls on their console if they wish to set it up to use it. To get started, you’ll need to link your PlayStation Network account to Discord and then select Discord in “Linked Services”before completing the integration either via a QR code or via the PS5 browser. And whenever you want to voice chat with your Discord friends, you’ll need to use your mobile device or PC to forward the call to PS5.

So the process is somewhat complicated, but Microsoft has been allowing you to join Discord voice calls directly from Xbox since last November. Therefore, we can hope that Sony will offer the same process in the more or less near future. As The Verge clarifies, PS5 integration does not yet include text messages and streams. Therefore, you won’t be able to enjoy it from your console.

Additionally, this latest update adds Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) support for HDMI 2.1 displays at 1440p. This results in less stuttering and lag in VRR-enabled games as the feature allows the screen to adapt to the console’s current frame rate. Players will also see a notification when they download or install a PS4 game on PS5, letting them know they have data saved to PSN cloud storage. All they have to do to download this data is select a notification.

This update also makes improvements to the console’s screen reader by giving users the ability to tell users which direction they can move in and what their current position is. Gamers can also update their wireless controller’s firmware, and if you live in the US or UK, you can record gameplay video with a simple voice command. Just say, “Hey PlayStation, take that off!”

Sony launched a beta version of this update in February. PS5 owners now just have to wait a bit for it to show up on their console, or go to the dedicated page to start the update manually for more information.
