Emoji Meaning Guide: Communicate Without Embarrassment
It’s hard to believe, but before emoji, there was a time when people were forced to communicate with words alone. Communication was tense and confusing. People were forced to exchange phrases “Are you kidding??” texts to understand the true meaning of the statement. It was a dark time.
Fortunately, in 2022 there are emojis for all occasions. And adding them to your social media posts isn’t just fun. Adding emojis can increase engagement by 25% on Twitter and 57% more likes on Facebook. In one AdEspresso experiment, adding an emoji to an ad title increased clicks by 241%!
Why It’s Important to Understand Emoji Meanings
We’re using more emoji than ever before, and for good reason: they’re versatile, inclusive, and fun. But when adding emoji to your social media posts, you need to make sure you use them correctly.
Each emoji has a literal meaning (that’s a peach), but many of them also have secondary meanings that change over time (that’s an ass too!). Often the secondary meaning overshadows the first: only 7% of users actually use the peach emoji to represent fruit.
As a result, it’s important to understand the meanings of emoji before using them to avoid potential embarrassment or misunderstanding. You definitely don’t want to be the grocery store that tweets, “Look at our eggplants!!! ??”unless you’re hoping to get some NSFW photos in your private messages.
Luckily for you, we’ve put together a handy emoji meaning index below. The next time you’re wondering what a particular emoji means, or why everyone is suddenly posting a chair emoji on TikTok, you can refer to the one below.
