Samsung patents the first smartphone with a foldable and retractable display

Samsung may be working on a new foldable smartphone form factor. Currently, the company has released two types of foldable smartphones. One of the two foldable smartphones released by Samsung has a foldable clamshell display, while the other has a folding mechanism similar to opening or closing a book. According to several past reports, the company is also working on a dual screen folding smartphone. The latest patent filed by Samsung shows that the company may release another form of foldable smartphone that also includes a slide-out display mechanism. Let’s take a look at Samsung Galaxy’s patented foldable smartphone design, images and other details.

Samsung phone with retractable folding display

Samsung may release a new smartphone with a retractable display that can also be folded. Images of the patented technology have leaked through the World Intellectual Property Organization. Multiple patent images unearthed by 91Mobiles suggest that the company may have been working on a smartphone that expands to the right. Users can also fold the display to various angles using the hinge mechanism when the pop-up display is not in use.

While the pop-up display is assisted by a spinning motor below the display, the folding mechanism will be possible with a hinge below the screen on the right side of the device.

The folding mechanism is such that users can slide and expand the display, or convert it to something like “Flex Mode”found on the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 foldable smartphone.

Filing a patent doesn’t necessarily mean a device will see a launch. It just goes to show that Samsung is currently developing the technology and such patents help protect the technology from competitors. If the company manages to release such a smartphone with a retractable folding display, it will most likely be the first in the world. Companies such as Oppo and LG have already teased their concept of a smartphone with a retractable display. However, no release date was given for these devices. Will Samsung win again? Time will show.
