Scalar, Ubisoft’s native cloud technology

Ubisoft wants to transform the development and experience of video games with the power and flexibility of the cloud.

Developed by Ubisoft Stockholm (in collaboration with Massive Entertainment, Ubisoft RedLynx, Ubisoft Bucharest and Ubisoft Kyiv) to create an unprecedented license, the scalar architecture transforms elements of traditional game engines into microservices in the cloud, moving processing power from local machines to a distributed model on a potentially unlimited number of machines.

It aims to create a new design model that reduces technical and manufacturing constraints to allow developers to focus on the gaming experience. In this way, the production of video games using this technology can use almost infinite processing power to enrich each of these elements without compromise. and create vast virtual worlds with complex environments and simulations that were previously unattainable.

“This is a truly unique moment in our development career. We feel the same inspiration and the same freedom as when we have a computer in our hands for the first time, namely this feeling that everything is possible with the full power of the cloud in our hands for the first time in the industry,” says Christian Holmqvist, CTO at Ubisoft Stockholm. “We have relied on 35 years of continuous investment in research and development and proprietary technologies because technological independence is an important differentiating element in the industry,” emphasizes Guillemet Picard, Vice President of Manufacturing Technology at Ubisoft. “Scalar is following this line by stimulating both our creativity and our unique model of co-development through new means of collaborating on a global scale. This is a decisive step and an important milestone for the video game community. ”

Manufacturing technology, Ubisoft’s new department for Scalar

At the forefront of technology, Ubisoft Scalar is cross-platform compatible, offering development teams and gamers the flexibility and benefits of cloud gaming for tomorrow’s gaming. This natively cross-platform and scalable technology brings together millions of players for massive social gaming and experiences. With cloud-accelerated gaming systems, worlds can now reach a never-before-seen level of persistence where each player’s actions can have an immediate and lasting impact on the environment, opening the door to new emerging gameplay.

One of the strengths of Ubisoft Scalar, putting scalability at the heart of its design, is its on-demand approach. This technology can automatically start and stop each service and is dynamically optimized based on development or in-game activity to only use the power it needs in real time. This optimization extends to large computational operations that are cached and distributed globally to avoid re-executing any computation that has already been performed.
