Sony will stop updating Dreams in a few months
Sony and Media Molecule will stop updating Dreams in a few months, marking the end of a promising platform.
Media Molecule, one of several studios owned by Sony, will cease active development of Dreams. After the final update in September next year, the game creation platform will no longer be supported, but the studio will continue to fix critical bugs as needed.
Sony and Media Molecule will stop updating Dreams in a few months
This decision means that Dreams will not be eligible for multiplayer support, as was long planned. And Media Molecule won’t release PlayStation 5 or PlayStation VR2 versions of Dreams either. Dreams came out on PS4 in early 2020, and a few months later Media Molecule added PSVR compatibility.
Dreams will remain for sale, and you can still create experiences and discover what others have created. However, as part of the transition to the server, Media Molecule will introduce a new storage limit for creatives. Users will be limited to 5 GB, but existing projects don’t count.
In addition, Media Molecule will no longer be hosting their Dreams events to highlight some of the community’s most beautiful and impressive creations. The studio will also drop some features, such as native Twitch support, but you’ll still be able to stream what you’re doing in Dreams via the console’s Twitch integration.
The end of a very promising platform
It’s a pity that Media Molecule abandoned Dreams. There are a number of very pleasant experiences on the platform. Some creators have even gotten jobs in video game development thanks to their creations in Dreams. Last year, Sony’s film division acquired the rights to the film, which will be partly filmed in Dreams.
Unfortunately, Dreams doesn’t seem to have the kind of success that Media Molecule and Sony hoped for to justify continuing to work on the platform. “While we have always had a desire to design based on Dreams and expand on the overall experience, when we evaluated our projects, we could not find a workable solution,” the studio wrote in its announcement.
Media Molecule explains that it is now embarking on an “exciting new project”that is not related to Dreams in any way, but clarifies that the decision to stop developing the platform in this way was not an easy one. “Dreams was a very special project for Media Molecule and helping this budding community of game developers, thinkers, creatives, collaborators and dreamers grow and express themselves remains one of the greatest things we’ve ever done.”
Here is an abridged version of the fan art I made for #thelastofus in Dreams on my PS5. Everything here was sculpted from scratch for this project. Looking forward to doing a similar video for season 2 ❤️ #MadeInDreams pic.twitter.com/dJ3c3NJuLb
