Sony Pictures Entertainment has acquired the film rights to Tarzan
Created by Edgar Rice Burroughs, Tarzan will return to the big screen with a complete reinvention of the character.
Plans for Sony Pictures Entertainment are still in their infancy and no writer, director or producer has joined in what could be a complete reimagining of Tarzan. The popular character, created by Edgar Rice Burroughs in 1912, is the brainchild of an English noble family raised on monkeys in the African jungle after their parents failed and died there. He had no contact with Western culture until he was an adult and “king of the monkeys”.

Tarzan in Film, a return under the auspices of Sony Pictures Entertainment
The film adaptation of Tarzan dates back to Hollywood itself: the first, Tarzan of the Apes, appeared in 1918. The latest release was Warner Bros’ The Legend of Tarzan in 2016 starring Alexander Skarsgård. He raised about $350 million worldwide and expanded his scope to address the colonial aspects of the original intellectual property.
