Sony has sold over 25 million PS5s
Sony has sold over 25 million PS5s and it’s far from over.
During the latest presentation of financial results, Sony said that at least 3.3 million PlayStation 5 units were sold this quarter, bringing it to the same figure as last year, bringing the total number of units sold since launch to 25 million .. However, the numbers for this quarter are far from the 18 million PS5 sales expected in fiscal 2022. In half of the fiscal year (which ends March 31), Sony had 5.7 million sales, which is almost the same as 2021. period (5.6 million).
Sony has sold over 25 million PS5s
Despite an identical number of PS5s sold, revenue increased significantly (12%) to around $4.92 billion, thanks in part to a PS5 price increase a few months ago. However, profits were down 49% due to the recent acquisition of Bungie as well as increased development costs.
Sony sold 11.5 million consoles last year. There is a good chance that sales in 2022 will be the same. At the same time, the celebration of the end of the year will be crucial, as will the production capacity of the Japanese giant. This is an issue that has plagued the PS5 since its launch due to the Covid-19 pandemic and other issues. Last May, Sony explained that it was finally able to increase production to meet demand, taking advantage of the return of suppliers to normal. Without giving any specific numbers, we see here and there that the console has become easier to acquire than in recent months.
And it’s far from over
At the same time, software sales have fallen from 76.4 million last year to “only”62.5 million. Digital downloads account for 63% of that figure, up slightly from last year. The number of PlayStation Plus subscriptions has been declining for the second quarter in a row.
Sony revised down its earnings forecast for the next quarter due to an unexpected drop in home game sales. The giant remains optimistic about the next fiscal year, aiming to ship at least 23 million PS5s over that period. The company also expects to sell 18 million consoles by the end of the fiscal year (March 2023). To be continued!
