General Motors is partnering with Microsoft to offer a ChatGPT-style assistant in its vehicles. Task: to make life easier for drivers with artificial intelligence.

General Motors thinks you might want a virtual assistant for in-car chat that takes advantage of OpenAI’s ChatGPT. Semafor says the manufacturer is currently developing an embedded personal assistant hosted in the Microsoft Azure cloud that will be built on the same AI models as ChatGPT. General Motors has been partnering with Microsoft on autonomous vehicle technology for two years now, and Microsoft has already invested billions of dollars in OpenAI. One of the first fruits of this investment was Bing Chat.

“ChatGPT will be everywhere,”said GM vice president Scott Miller. General Motors has been trying to catch up with Tesla by developing a smarter driver assistance system, but it looks like ChatGPT has opened up exciting new avenues to compete with Elon Musk’s company.

“Customers can expect their next vehicles to be significantly more capable and with a greater modern approach to new technology,” a GM spokesperson said in the same report. At the same time, the auto giant plans not just to port ChatGPT to the digital dashboard of its cars. The company wants to give it a deep and very distinctive look.

Making life easier for drivers with artificial intelligence

With a smart assistant like ChatGPT in the infotainment system, drivers will be able to do much more than ask to play this or that song on Spotify. For example, they might ask an assistant to explain the features of the car so they don’t have to dig through manuals or watch boring videos.

Such an assistant can perform complex tasks, such as scheduling a follow-up session or follow-up visit, depending on the availability of your calendar. It can also be very handy in emergencies. The ChatGPT-based on-board assistant can even offer step-by-step assistance in the event of a breakdown.

This help can come with voice prompts or simply by displaying the relevant video on the toolbar. That being said, GM has not said when it will showcase its next-generation assistant and, more importantly, when it will be integrated into its driver assistance systems.

A few days ago, General Motors introduced the next version of its advanced driver assistance technology (ADAS) called Ultra Cruise, which replaces Super Cruise technology. It wouldn’t be surprising if the company kept this ChatGPT-based assistance system in its more luxurious models like the Cadillac Celestiq.
