The God of War series has given us some of the best games ever based on ancient mythologies. The series has a peculiar way of dealing with ancient myths. Games can be immersed in games from the Greek era and the Scandinavian era. Unsurprisingly, God of War (2018) became the best-selling video game on the PlayStation 4, and in January 2022 its Windows port was released to more players. GoW has even introduced many new players to Norse myths and gods. Therefore, it is natural that many players are interested in learning more about playable characters and comparing their counterparts from myths. So today we have a list of all God of War Ragnarok characters from Norse mythology.

The characters can be divided into 3 groups. All Scandinavian characters that have appeared in the game will be confirmed first, followed by those from the 2018 game that are vital to the current story. And finally, we will have a 3rd group of characters that will be mentioned in various dialogues throughout the game. So knowing them by name will undoubtedly improve immersion and understanding of the game’s story. Kratos

Kratos, known to the Yotnaram as Farbauti, is the main protagonist of the God of War series of games. Born in Sparta, Kratos is a demigod son of Zeus and later became a full-fledged God himself, becoming the titular God of War with incredible superhuman god-like strength and fighting skills.

Kratos was once a respected soldier and Spartan general until he lost his wife and daughter when he killed them, albeit by accident, under Ares’ command, earning him the nickname “Ghost of Sparta”, after which he gave up his service at Ares’ side.. God of War, eventually killing him and rising to Divinity, becoming the new and complete “God of War”.

Atreus

Atreus is the son of Kratos and Laufey and the deuteragonist of God of War (2018). Yotnaram he is known as Loki. Kratos tells his son that his namesake was a great Spartan warrior who, unlike most Spartans, was happy and full of life.

Likely due to being the son of a former Olympian god of war and a frost giantess, Atreus possesses considerable superhuman physical abilities. Atreus has yet to discover the extent of his abilities, as Mimir notes that he has great potential due to his unique heritage.

Loki is a cunning trickster from Norse mythology. His father is the giant Jotunn Farbauti and his mother is Laufey. He is the brother of Helbindi and Beleistra. Together with the giantess Angrboda, Loki is the father of Hel, Jörmungandr and Fenrir.

Mimir

Mimir, also known as the Smartest Man Alive and nicknamed Kratos the Head, is a figure of Norse mythology known for his knowledge and wisdom, and an ally of Kratos and Atreus. He was Odin’s adviser and Æsir ambassador until Odin imprisoned him 109 years ago. He is the tritagonist of God of War (2018). Mimir means “remember”or “wise”in Old Norse.

He is a figure in Norse mythology known for his knowledge and wisdom. He is beheaded by the Vanir gods during the war between the Æsir and the Vanir. Odin revives Mimir’s head with magic after the Vanir gave it to Odin. After that, Odin carries the head of Mimir with him, and she tells him secret knowledge. He is Odin’s maternal uncle.

Thor

Thor is the Scandinavian god of thunder, lightning, storm and strength. Father of Magni and Modi and son of Odin. Thor appears in the true ending of God of War (2018) and returns as one of the main antagonists of God of War: Ragnarok. His most famous weapon is the hammer Mjolnir, powerful enough to level mountains.

One

Odin, also known as the Allfather, is the king of Asgard, the ruler of Valhalla, and the king of the gods of the Æsir. He is also the Norse god of the sky, war, death, wisdom, poetry, and magic. He is the one who imprisoned Mimir in the past and personally tortured him every day. He also sent Baldur to inquire about Faye’s whereabouts. In mythology, he was usually depicted wearing a cloak and wide-brimmed hat and carrying the spear Gungnir, a legendary artifact that, once thrown, never hits its mark.

Brock and Sindri (Huldra Brothers)

Notable dwarf smiths who forged the Leviathan Ax and Mjolnir. Sindri and Brock help Kratos and Atreus on their adventures. In their forge, they can improve weapons and equipment, as long as they are given the necessary materials.

Tyr

Tyr is the Scandinavian god of war, law and honor. He is one of the sons of Odin, the half-brother of Thor, Baldur, Khodr and Braga. A born pacifist, Tyr sought to establish peace between his people, the Aesir, and their long-time enemies, the Eutn. But his father Odin betrayed him when he imprisoned him and attacked the giants. In Norse mythology, he is usually described as having only one arm and losing the other to the wolf Fenrir.

Angrboda

Angrboda is Jotun, wife of Loki and mother of Jörmungandr, Fenrir and Hel. She survived the giant genocide by the Æsir gods. In Scandinavian mythology, Angrboda or Angrboda is a Jotun woman. In the Poetic Edda, Angrboda is only mentioned in Völuspá hin skamma as the mother of Fenrir Loki.

Durlin

The second gnome was created after the first and chief gnome Motzognir. In the first trailer, Durleen appears to be familiar to Brock and Sindri. He wears a purple squid named Dinner on his shoulder. In Norse mythology, Durinn forged the magic sword Tyrfing with the help of the dwarf Dwalin. In various texts of the saga, Durinn is known as Dulinn.

Fenrir

Fenrir, also known as Hróðvitnir (the wolf of glory), is a giant wolf god and considered one of the greatest enemies of the Æsir. He is destined to fight and kill Odin during Ragnarok. He is Sköll and Hati’s father. He is also the brother of Jörmungandr.

In Norse mythology, as soon as the gods became aware of their existence, they began to fear them, as it was predicted that these siblings would bring great misfortune to the gods due to the nature of both their parents, specifically their father Loki.

Freya

She is the goddess of the Vanir who assists Kratos and Atreus on their journey. She is Baldr’s mother, Odin’s ex-wife, and former Valkyrie queen. Goddess of magic, love, beauty, death, war and fertility. Freya is the minor antagonist of God of War: Ragnarok, seeking revenge on Kratos for killing Baldur.

Jörmungand

Jörmungandr, also known as the World Serpent, is the mythical Jötunn serpent who is destined to fight Thor at Ragnarök. He becomes an ally of Kratos and Atreus after the pair awaken him from a deep sleep in the Lake of Nine.

In Norse mythology, Jörmungandr’s sworn enemy is the thunder god Thor, and it was foretold that they would kill each other during Ragnarök. Jörmungandr will be killed by Thor, who will then take nine steps before succumbing to the venom of the serpent Eitr, which he spewed into the air during the battle.

Sköll and Hati

Two giant wolf, sons of Fenrir and grandsons of Loki and Angrboda. When Sköll and Hati were puppies, Odin captured them and kept them in a kennel in Asgard to keep their father Hrodvitnir, who was considered one of the most dangerous enemies of the Aesir, at bay.

In Norse mythology, Sköll and Hati chase the horse-drawn chariots of Sol and Mani, representing the sun and moon respectively, every day and night until they are finally caught, marking the beginning of Ragnarök.

Speck and Swann

The she-wolves of Kratos and Atreus are pulling their sleighs.

surt

Surt, also known as Surt, is the first fire giant and the second existing being to be born. He is the ruler of Muspelheim and the fire giants. He is hidden deep in his realm and is constantly training and honing his skills to prepare for Ragnarok, in which he will lead his family against the Aesir and destroy Asgard.

In Norse mythology, Surtr is predicted to be the main figure during the events of Ragnarök; carrying his bright flaming sword, he will go to battle against the Aesir and the chief god of the Vanir, Freyr. After that, the flames it spawns will engulf the Earth.

Balder

Baldur was the Norse Æsir god of light and the main antagonist of God of War (2018). He was the son of Odin and Freya, the half-brother of Thor, Meili, Tyr, Hodr and Braga, and the uncle of Magni and Modi. Baldur responds to Odin’s call to hunt down Jotunn the Guard, one of the two remaining Jothnars in Midgard who have been thwarting the plans of the Aesir for some time.

The Giants knew all the events of Ragnarok and that Baldur always had to die at the hands of Kratos when he did so. Kratos realized that Baldur was never supposed to be looking for him as Baldur was hunting down Kratos’ wife, Faye, but by that time he was unaware that she had turned to ash. Freya is left devastated and angry after his death despite Baldur’s attempt on her life. She vows revenge on Kratos before taking her son’s body with her and disappearing.

Faye

Laufey the Just, or Fei for short, was a frost giant from Jotunheim, the second wife of Kratos and the mother of Atreus. In the 2018 game, Fei only appears as a corpse wrapped in sheets and then cremated, but is a key character widely referenced in God of War.

Her real name was Laufey and, according to Mimir, she was known as the great giant heroine known as Laufey the Just for her deeds of helping the weak and helpless and opposing the cruel Aesir and their king, Odin. At one point, she collaborated with Tyr to hide the Kingdom Tower in Jotunheim by cutting it off from home in order to protect her family from Thor’s genocide.

Laufey or Nal is a figure from Norse mythology, the mother of Loki and the wife of Farbauti. Laufey is mentioned several times in the Prose Edda, compiled in the 13th century by Snorri Sturluson. The first mention is in Gylfaginning, where High represents Loki. High says that Loki is the son of Farbauti, that “Laufei or Nal”is his mother, and that his brothers are Bileister and Helblindi.

Magni and Modi

Sons of Thor. They help their uncle Baldur find someone and end up in conflict with Kratos and Atreus.

Valkyries

Female entities that take warriors who fall in battle to Valhalla. There are nine Valkyries in total, including their queen, Sigrun.

Aurvandil

Groa’s husband, who went missing after he went to Vanaheim with Thor.

Bragi

Aces bard.

Freyr

Ruler of Vanaheim.

Groa

A powerful seer seeks her lost husband, Aurvandil.

Heimdall

Aces with great foresight.

Khödr

Blind son of Odin, god of winter.

Hoenir

Ases, gods of silence.

hrimtur

It is later mentioned that Tamur’s proud son, who unwittingly caused his father’s death by fleeing after a fight with his father, built walls with a secret weakness that he passed on to Freya before Thor killed him.

Sif

Thor’s wife.

Tamur

The mason Jotunn was killed by Thor after a quarrel with his son Hrimtur.

Vili and Ve

Brothers of Odin.
