Spotify is rethinking its live audio ambitions downwards

Spotify is slowing down the live audio market and canceling many of its programs.

Fans of a number of Spotify’s live audio series will soon have to say goodbye to their favorite programs. Indeed, according to Bloomberg, the music and podcast streaming service has ceased production of series such as Doughboys: Snack Pack, Two Me After Dark, which describes itself as “the place for a final tea with your favorite personalities,”The Movie Buff with a comedian. Jon Gabrus and A Gay in the Life, which offers a safe space to share opinions across the LGBTQ+ world. These programs have already been canceled or their cancellation has been formalized.

A spokesperson for the company confirmed the cancellation to Bloomberg. According to several sources, Spotify closed some of these programs before the contracts with their creators expired, but the service will pay them the full amount promised.

Several companies, including Spotify, saw live audio programming as a new growth segment as the pandemic and lockdown raged on and Clubhouse’s popularity skyrocketed. Spotify has undergone a major revamp of Locker Room, the sports audio social network it acquired in March 2021, and renamed it Greenroom. The platform launched a dedicated Greenroom app last year, rebranding it as Spotify Live in April and integrating it into its main app.

If the cancellation of several programs indicates that the company is now reconsidering its ambitions to the downside in this market, this does not mean that it will completely abandon this format. Bloomberg explains that The Fantasy Footballers and The Ringer MMA Show will continue their adventure.
