Spotify is testing TikTok-style navigation for video clips

Spotify is testing TikTok-style vertical navigation to discover new songs and new artists.

Vertical navigation for videos in vertical format has been widely popularized by applications such as TikTok et al. Videos are displayed vertically and users can scroll up or down to find new content. From the very first appearance, we have seen how it works in a number of other applications that have released their own features for short videos. And today, it seems that Spotify wants to start too.

Spotify is testing vertical navigation, the TikTok way

At least that’s what Chris Messina’s tweet says. The man discovered that the music streaming platform is currently testing navigation similar to what TikTok offers for its clips. The concept is very similar to what we have seen in other apps, with the ability to scroll up or down to view different videos.

Discover new songs and new artists

The main difference here is that the functionality seems to be focused on music videos. Considering that Spotify is a music streaming platform and not a social platform, it makes sense that the videos in this new section of the Discover app will be music-related videos and not anything video-related. And anything you can find on TikTok, Instagram or YouTube.

This new feature can also integrate perfectly with the existing Spotify feature called Canvas. For those who don’t know, Canvas is a feature that allows Spotify artists to create short videos for their songs. It launched in 2019, but reception has been mixed to say the least. That being said, we can easily imagine that Canvas and vertical navigation could be a very good solution, allowing users to discover new titles and new videos about their favorite artists.

Omg for the first time in how long(?), @Spotify has added a FOURTH icon to their toolbar: Discover! #NewSpotify pic.twitter.com/XQL2jpkXYq
