Watch this quick how-to video comparing the Apple M2 MacBook Air (2022) and the new MacBook Pro with M2 Pro (2023).

This is not a detailed speed comparison for geeks. Of course, the MacBook Pro uses faster Apple silicon than the more mainstream MacBook Air. Additionally, Apple last updated the MacBook Air in July 2022, and the 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pros were upgraded to M2 Pro and M2 Max chips in January 2023.

It all comes down to a simple choice: do you prefer portability over productivity? You might be the type of person who does resource-intensive tasks on the go, such as processing huge photos, editing multiple 4K video streams, creating complex designs using well-known software packages such as Adobe Creative Suite, and the like.

You can also process high-resolution photos, work on complete projects, and edit 4K videos on the MacBook Air M2. It’s just that the MacBook Pro lets you add more when working on projects — more audio tracks, more video streams, more layers in Photoshop, and so on — without waiting than with the Air.

For most consumers, the MacBook Air with an M2 processor will be more than adequate, and it’s Apple’s thinnest and most portable laptop in the lineup. On the other hand, the new MacBook Pro with the M2 Pro chip is on a completely different level of performance. But that power comes at a price: the MacBook Pro is heavier, thicker, and more expensive than the Air.
