Like most fighting games, Street Fighter has a relatively simple storyline. The episodes usually revolve around a group of flamboyant fighters who compete in a global fighting tournament organized by the Shadaloo international crime syndicate. The list of playable characters in the franchise over the years has exceeded a hundred, but the undisputed leader is Ryu, the master of the Hadouken. Other characters in the license include Ken, Ryu’s best friend, his nemesis Akuma, Chinese Interpol agent Chun-Li, British Super Soldier Cammy, American Air Force Commander Guile, the strange green-skinned Beastman Blanca, and the main antagonist, Shadaloo’s leader, M. Bison.

Past Street Fighter film adaptations on the big screen

The success of the Capcom games spawned two live-action films. The first, Street Fighter (1994), received negative reviews but enjoyed relative commercial success and gained a following over the years, especially with Raoul Julia’s surprisingly goofy performance as M. Bison. The second, The Legend of Chun-Li (2009), received similarly negative reviews and was a box office flop. Three anime films and two anime series based on the franchise have also been released.
