Systems Research and Development (SRD) becomes a subsidiary of Nintendo.
In the midst of consolidation in the video game industry, Nintendo has taken in its historic partner.
One year after acquiring Next Level Games (Metroid Prime Federation, Mario Strikers Battle League Football), Japanese publisher Nintendo announces the acquisition of development and support studio SRD (Super Mario Maker 2, Animal Crossing New Horizons, Ring Fit Adventure, Super Smash Bros Ultimate) total for $400,000: Completion of this deal will strengthen SRD’s management base and ensure the availability of development resources for Nintendo, as well as the expected improvement in game development efficiency. The transaction is expected to close on April 1, subject to all relevant terms and conditions and the usual closing conditions. ”
For the record, systems research and development teams have been present at Nintendo premises for several years.
Nintendo is not going to “arm”like Sony and Microsoft
While Sony and Microsoft are in an acquisition race, Nintendo is in no rush to buy up a lot of game studios. During a recent meeting with investors, Chairman Shuntaro Furukawa said that the Kyoto firm’s strategy is different: “Our brand was built on products developed with dedication by our employees and on the presence of a large number of people in our group that the absence of Nintendo DNA would not be an advantage. “
