“The mighty Roman Empire has always fascinated me, especially its gigantic games that entertained the masses with the spectacle of the monumental Colosseum,” said German director Roland Emmerich. “At the heart of this film is a sports epic driven by strong and diverse characters who explore the path to glory, the fall of grace and the need to belong to something bigger than yourself. Sports in those ancient times were as exciting and massive as they are today, and I’m thrilled to be working with my partners, Peacock, High End Productions, the Hollywood Gang and AGC Studios, to bring this rich world of blood, sweat and tears to television.”.

Lisa Katz, president of Scripted Content for NBCUniversal Television and Streaming, added, “Those about to die are approaching ancient Rome in a whole new way. The series will be epic and will offer a spectacle of gladiators and chariot races, as well as unexpected characters in the midst of palace intrigue and a dark underworld. We jumped at the opportunity to collaborate with the consummate creative minds of Roland Emmerich, Robert Rodath, Harald Kloser, AGC Studios and Gianni Nunnari’s Hollywood gang to create this bold, action-packed series for Peacock viewers.”
