Tesla will make design changes to its Model 3 to lower costs
Tesla is working on a new design for its Model 3 to lower manufacturing costs.
Tesla is working on a new design for its Model 3, codenamed Highland, according to Reuters. The company’s goal is to reduce the complexity and number of components needed to produce a sedan. This redesign will include changes to the car’s appearance and powertrain performance. The project is also supposed to take on some elements of the 2021 Model S, but at this stage, no one knows if the new Model 3 will take on the controversial steering wheel of its more expensive counterpart.

Reuters reports that the Shanghai gigafactory could begin production of this new Model 3 in the third quarter of 2023. The Fremont plant will also be involved in the production of this model. How will it save the brand? No one knows. It is also impossible to know whether this reduction in the cost of production will be reflected on the final invoice. Tesla is currently making about $9,500 per car.

Reuters also did not mention if this new generation of battery cells will feature 4680s. In 2020, Elon Musk said that this new battery design would allow Tesla to produce a $25,000 electric car within three years.
In any case, even if this schedule for 2023 is confirmed, it is still subject to change. Reuters is also not well informed when it comes to Tesla, especially lately. And Elon Musk’s company isn’t really known for meeting deadlines. For example, when the company first announced its Cybertruck, the American billionaire said production would begin in 2021. This date was then pushed back to 2022 and then to 2023.
