TikTok is laying off employees around the world. However, neither figures nor reasons are reported.
Some TikTok employees have already lost their jobs, while others are preparing for HR interviews as part of the video platform’s major global workforce restructuring program, Wired reports. According to a US magazine article, European employees have been warned that their jobs could be made redundant and that they can expect to meet with HR in the coming weeks. In the UK, it was said that employees of all departments could soon leave their posts. In the United States, some learned they were about to be fired when they arrived at the office on Monday morning.

Those US employees include David Ortiz, who was one of the first executives hired outside of China by TikTok’s parent company, ByteDance. In a LinkedIn post, he explained that his “role is being phased out as part of a major reorganization program.”A TikTok spokesperson did not deny that the layoffs were ongoing when asked by Wired. However, he also did not confirm that the company is undergoing a global restructuring, and did not provide any details about the reason for these layoffs.
However, neither figures nor reasons are reported.
An employee told the magazine that the company only releases employees or teams that their managers feel have not contributed enough. In total, only 100 employees will be laid off, which is only a very small percentage of the 10,000 employees working in the US and Europe. That being said, TikTok is just one of many other tech companies currently taking pay cuts.
Technology companies that have had to part ways with many of their employees include Netflix, Unity and Twitter. Tesla announced the layoff of 200 employees working on the Autopilot program, and even the closure of an office in California. Bloomberg reported that Rivian planned a 5% reduction in staff, and Meta ordered its managers to identify underperforming employees and fire them if they can’t perform better.
