Unity Technologies completes merger with IronSource

Announced in July last year, despite a counteroffer from AppLovin, the merger between IronSource and Unity Technologies is complete.

IronSource’s various mobile app monetization and ad-focused solutions will soon be integrated into Unity Technologies offerings, which continues to grow in technology and entertainment sectors other than mobile with the acquisition of Ziva Dynamics, Pixyz Software, SpeedTree, Parsec, SyncSketch and Weta digital.

Unity has merged with @ironSource. We’re excited because together we offer the best tools to support developers throughout the development lifecycle as they create, launch and develop real-time immersive games and 3D applications. Read more on the blog.

John Riccitello, CEO of Unity Technologies, said:

The benefits of the ironSource merger are actually especially important for mobile game developers who have chosen advertising as their business model. Gamers are a highly engaged audience, but only a small minority (less than 2%) use in-app purchases in the games they play. Advertising and in-app purchases are the means of choice for most mobile game developers to monetize their games. And most gamers welcome ads as a way to discover new games. This provides developers with income not only to pay bills, but also to fund their growing teams and create even better games. We know you will have many questions about how Unity will integrate and implement these products. We are committed to integrating our technologies quickly and transparently to deliver the best tools and services.

IronSource is in trouble, Unity Technologies comes to the rescue

Since the announcement of the merger, some developers have raised concerns about a past incident where an IronSource product was classified as malware and removed due to backlash. Unity Technologies said the malware came from “platform abusive attackers”and indicated that the IronSource desktop business they were running “was terminated several years ago.”
