Sonos app has an unannounced miniature subwoofer
Small space often means weak sound. If you’re like me and live in a cramped apartment, there just isn’t much room for bulky speakers and surround sound systems. A potentially upcoming offering from Sonos could be the ticket to delivering powerful sound through a small device.
We are talking about the Sonos Sub Mini. Sonos didn’t announce it, and it’s not on the audio company’s website. However, as Android Police reported yesterday, someone on the Sonos subreddit reportedly spotted the name while using the Sonos app.
“When I was adding my second routine to my system, I noticed the ‘more info’ button, clicked it, and was redirected to this page in the app,”Reddit user u/S114HED wrote on Saturday, along with this screenshot.:
There isn’t much information out there other than that the Sub Mini is a “smaller cylindrical subwoofer”. There are no clues in the screenshot about dimensions, specs, features, pricing, or release date.
Sonos’ current subwoofer, the Sub (Gen 3), is $750, so a smaller option could potentially bring in a lower entry price for a Sonos subwoofer. The rectangular prismatic submarine measures 15.8 x 15.3 x 6.2 inches or 402 x 389 x 158 mm (W x H x D) and weighs 36.3 pounds (16 kg).
Of course, there are subwoofers that are smaller than what Sonos currently offers. For example, the BlueSound Pulse Sub+ (MSRP $ 750) is 18 × 11.8 × 5.7 inches (457 × 300 × 146 mm) and 18.3 pounds (8.3 kg), Elac Muro Slim series subwoofer remains cropped to 4.8 × 15.2 × 14.2 inches and 17.2 pounds (MSRP $1,000). And while the Monoprice SSW-8 takes up more space than the Sub (Gen 3), it’s noticeably short (Monoprice sells it as a TV stand fit), measuring 21.3 x 6.2 x 15.7 inches (540 x 158 x 400). mm, weight not specified).
The biggest consumer technology show in the US, CES, is coming up in January, Android Police notes, so we might hear more about Sonos’ small subwoofer then. But since the company didn’t say anything about the Sub Mini, it’s also possible that the product never hit the shelves and was accidentally listed on the app. Let’s hope that for the little house dwellers looking for more options, a subwoofer will be implemented.
