Access keys use your biometrics to authenticate you, but the process is different from fingerprint or facial recognition to automatically fill in fields on login forms. With access keys, you become an identity. When you enable an option for an app, a pair of crypto keys associated with your account is generated. One of these keys is public and is stored by apps and services to verify your identity. The other is private and only stored on your devices, so hackers won’t be able to steal it if they hijack the app servers you use. Apps and services that support access keys then compare the public key they have with your private key to make sure you’re actually signed in.
You can activate this feature by logging into your account from a desktop or mobile browser using your username and password and selecting “Generate Access Key”. After authenticating with Apple Face ID or Touch ID, your password will be automatically generated. And since passwords are synced with iCloud Keychain, this process only needs to be done once. If you log into your account on another device that does not yet have a passkey, you will be able to generate a QR code after entering your username. You can scan this QR code with a passcode compatible iPhone to sign in.
