Apple Studio Display’s built-in webcam is terrible, but an update is coming

Big problem with the quality of the Apple Studio Display webcam. There will be an update soon.

Admittedly, Apple offers products that are often very well finished, both in terms of design and internal functionality. But there is one aspect that the Cupertino company is purely and simply forgoing, so to speak, and that is the built-in webcam, whether in its computers or its monitors. While progress has been made in this area, the quality offered is satisfactory at best. And that still applies to the brand new Studio Display.

Big problem with the quality of the Apple Studio Display webcam

The Apple Studio Display is a beautifully designed monitor with top-notch features. This screen even has built-in speakers as well as a webcam, avoiding the need for an external camera. And with a technical sheet announcing a 12-megapixel sensor and an A13 Bionic chip to take advantage of Center Stage – a feature that keeps the user always in the center of the field of view – one would think the quality would actually be there. You.

Unfortunately, despite the recent webcam advances found in the iMac M1 and newer MacBook Pros, the Studio Display’s webcam seems to offer really terrible quality. Anyway, that’s what follows from several monitor tests, including The Verge and Daring Fireball tests, both of which were very disappointing in this regard.

There will be an update soon

As they say, there is good news. The Verge contacted Apple to inform the Cupertino company, the latter acknowledging that there was indeed a quality issue, while at the same time stating that an update was coming soon to fix it. No one knows when this update will be available or what is causing this quality issue, but hopefully this will fix it.

If you’ve ordered a Studio Display and intend to use the built-in webcam, don’t be surprised if the quality on offer doesn’t match what you’d expect from a device with a 12-megapixel sensor and an A13 Bionic processor.
