At the end of October last year, Xiaomi launched 210W mobile charging technology through its subsidiary Redmi. In early February, the 240W version saw the light thanks to Realme – in the big Oppo and OnePlus family -. Today, with Mobile World Congress in full swing, Xiaomi is taking over with a 300W charging demo, which cuts the timer down to under 5 minutes – almost half the time of the two achievements mentioned above. Xiaomi added that this new 300W charger is the same size as the 210W charger thanks to a more modular design and internal heat dissipation.

This 300W demo with a modified Redmi Note 12 Pro+ with a 4100mAh battery, slightly less than the 4300mAh (210W) Redmi Note 12 Discovery Edition (and Realme is even more generous with a 4600mAh battery). As you can see in this video, the phone hits 20% in just over a minute, 50% in 2 minutes and 12 seconds, and finally 100% in less than 5 minutes. The power meter shows the charger peaking at just over 290 watts, otherwise the charger is rated to operate at 280 watts or more for about 2 minutes.

The battery here has 15C cells (as opposed to the Discovery Edition’s 10C) with new carbon materials instead of more traditional graphite compounds, which reduces the thickness of the electrodes by 35%. With an improved electrolyte formula, this lithium ion battery can deliver higher power density with faster charge and discharge rates, which appears to reduce the amount of heat generated in the process. These ultra-thin cells are then stacked using thermal materials in a new “sandwich”design to optimize heat dissipation and maximize interior space. As far as security is concerned,

This announcement from Xiaomi is a major step for the mobile industry, although the company has not mentioned whether this 300W charging technology will be made available to the general public. Xiaomi also did not reveal the number of charge cycles, which should remind us that the life of these batteries is directly dependent on the high recharging power.
