YouTube Vanced, the YouTube ad-blocking app, is leaving

It’s hard to be a fan of YouTube video ads that we watch every day. Of course, there are blockers on a desktop, but on a mobile phone, the operation is not as simple as downloading and installing a browser extension. Luckily, Android has the YouTube Vanced app, which blocks ads scattered across the platform and even messages from sponsors embedded in videos. Unfortunately, it looks like the app will no longer be available for download soon.

We learn from an announcement posted by the YouTube Vanced team that the app will no longer be supported and that the download links from their website will be taken down soon. The exact reasons for this decision were not disclosed, but judging by posts on Reddit and the app’s official Telegram channel, these appear to be legal reasons.

It is no longer in service but will continue to operate

In some ways, this is not surprising, especially considering the app has been around for so long. The app being a modified version of the official YouTube app, it’s quite obvious that YouTube hasn’t taken kindly to its existence. Especially since YouTube Vanced offered users some features normally only available to YouTube Premium users, including background playback, picture-in-picture mode, and more.

However, this announcement hides “good news”. Indeed, according to the responses to the original tweet, the app will continue to work. In other words, for those who have already installed it, don’t worry. However, the developers note that there is a good chance that one day it will simply stop working due to YouTube’s actions or because it is simply too old compared to YouTube.
