It is not easy to remove duplicate iPhone contacts with the built-in Contacts app. But there is a workaround that allows you to link contacts. On the other hand, third-party iOS apps allow you to quickly delete or merge duplicate contacts. Let’s take a look at both methods!
Merge contacts using the linked contacts feature
- Open the Contacts app. Or the Phone app and tap Contacts.
- Click on an entry that you think exists more than once.
- Click Edit.
- Scroll down and click on the contacts link.
- Click to select the contact you want to link.
- Click on the link in the top right corner.
- Finally, click Finish.
Now these two (or more) contacts are linked together. This does not delete the other entry, but adds both phone numbers to the same contact.
Let’s say you have a contact named Donald with a home phone number of 1234567 and another contact named Donald T with an office number of 9876543. When you link them, one entity will have both phone numbers under the same contact. You will only see one entry in your iPhone’s address book.
To unlink, tap on a contact → Edit → Tap on the red minus icon under RELATED CONTACTS → Unlink → Done.
